About the potential for hydrogen embrittlement
All components, which are subjected to electro-plating, may absorb hydrogen that is evolved during the plating
processes.
The absorption of hydrogen could potentially lead to a premature failure of the component due to hydrogen
embrittlement.
Components manufactured from carbon steel that are case or through-hardened are most at risk and as a
precaution we bake our fasteners to industry standards to minimise the risk of failure. However, we cannot fully
guarantee every component against hydrogen embrittlement problems in service.
In safety critical situations the only way we can guarantee the performance of hardened carbon steel parts is to
provide the part either self-colour or with a mechanically applied or dipped finish.
For property class 12.9 and above fasteners we highly recommend that parts are supplied with a mechanically
applied or dipped finish.
Give us a call to discuss alternative finishes where extra corrosion protection is required or if you are worried
about possible hydrogen embrittlement problems.
